We are no strangers to disaster scenes. On Site Energy Co.,Inc.,
based in Hicksville, has supplied emergency power for over 25
years.
"My first experience with a disaster scene was Hurricane
Gloria in 1985, which wiped out huge sections of the power
grid in the Hamptons", says Patrick French, manager
of sales for the company. During that disaster we called upon
associates around the Country and had generator sets towed
to New York from all over the United States. I met the trucks
on the Long Island Expressway, gave them our packing lists,
and they headed east. On Site Energy Co., Inc.
(OSEC) supplied temporary power during the first WTC bombing in 1993 and for months after
9/11. We have powered Fire Island, various hospitals in Nassau
County and in NYC, and powered shopping malls during the Thanksgiving
weekend rush. During the Northeast power outage in 2003 so many
people were purchasing generator
sets, NCPD posted officers at our building around the clock for two days.
OSEC has already dispatched 14 tractor trailer loads
of power to the Gulf Coast area. Many of the generators are at
hospitals and Red Cross stations
in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Some units shipped almost a
week ago, are only arriving
on sites today, the 18 hour
drive taking a week due to road
closures and redefined destinations.
We got caught up in the incident
last Saturday where the Army
shot and killed five looters.
Our truck was one of the trucks
trying to get to its destination
the Army as protecting; we were
delivering 8,000 gallons of
diesel fuel. What was not in
the news was that the fuel never
made it to our customer anyway;
it was confiscated by the Police
for use in other areas shortly
after the shooting was over.
Some of our employees took
it upon themselves to gather
up donations of bottled water
from food stores and pack it
on board the trucks headed
south. I didn't know they were
doing that, but it shows how
much emotion the guys are putting
into this particular disaster.
